The Iowa State student chapter of ASME has invited us down on November 15-16 for a meeting and NU vs. ISU football game, if they can get tickets. A sign-up sheet was passed around at the meeting for those interested, if you weren't at the meeting and would still be interested in attending contact one of the officers ASAP.
Those interested in taking a three day plant trip next semester to some nearby city (i.e. Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver, or Kansas City) get in touch with one of the officers, we would like to hear your input!!
New Business:Year Offices?? - The officers have been discussing the possibility of extending the term of all the offices to one year. Currently all offices are just semester terms. We feel that more could/would be accomplished if officers were in office for a full year instead of just for a semester. Please be thinking about this issue, as we will probably be discussing this and voting on it in upcoming meetings; feel free to let us know your opinion on this new term of office idea!!
Speaker:Al Koenig, Nebraska Section ASME, Lucent Technologies - Mr. Koenig informed us about the many benefits available to us after graduation if we maintain our membership in ASME: professional growth, meeting contacts in our same field of interest, learning about other fields, and volunteering in the community are just a few of the opportunities open to us after graduation if we continue being active members in ASME after we graduate.
A copy of the Nebraska Professional ASME plant tours is available through Pasha, and on the web page.Meeting adjourned at 6:40 pm.
Pizza, cookies, and pop were had by all!!!
Dr. Michael Riley, Industrial Engineering Department Chair, UNL - Dr. Riley informed us about ergonomics and the importance of including proper ergonomic design within in our own designs, whether in manufacturing or in product applications, ergonomics is an important aspect to keep in mind. He also mentioned briefly that they do offer a masters program in the industrial engineering department as well as undergraduate courses.
Announcements:'Goldberg' mechanism - Dr. Szydlowski brought up the idea of mechanical engineering students and ASME building a Goldberg mechanism for the purpose of displaying it during E-Week next semester. For those not familiar with the idea of a Goldberg mechanism, it is the designing of a machine to perform a simple task in an inefficient manner, such as cracking an egg, but in order to crack the egg, a motor must spin hoist something into the air, dropping the object propelling scissors to cut a string to let a gate open to let marbles go down a slide turning some gears in the process . . . Well you get the picture!!! Students interested in helping should start thinking of ideas and collecting junk from which to build the mechanism.
Henry Doorly Zoo Tour - The aquarium tour has been scheduled for November 21st for some time in the late afternoon - evening, we will probably be taking vans up there, space is limited, so stay tuned for further information regarding the tour.
Iowa State Weekend Excursion - The Iowa State plant tour (yeah right!) (Nebraska vs. ISU Football game)- ASME function has been scheduled for the weekend of November 16th . Those planning on attending should have already contacted Pasha to reserve your space to see the local plants (and reserve your stool at the bars).
