Do I have to take MECH488?
As you know, in the 1999-2000 ME Undergraduate Program Curriculum, MECH 342 and MECH 343 have been reduced from 4 credit hours each to 3 credit hours each and a 1 credit hour MECH 488 Kinematics and Machine Design Lab has been added. A question has arisen about what to do with regard to "transition" students who took MECH 342 as a 4 hour course last Spring but who are now taking MECH 343 as a 3 hour course this Fall. Per our discussion at the 11/12/99 ME Faculty meeting, it was agreed that these students will be allowed to choose one of the following two options.
1) The student will take the 1 credit hour MECH 488 lab. The combination of the 3 credit MECH 343 plus the 1 credit MECH 488 will substitute for the 4 credit MECH 343 on their senior check. It will be understood that students taking MECH 488, and who have taken the 4 credit hour MECH 342, will not be required to repeat the experiments and demonstrations already completed in the laboratory part of the "old" 4 credit hour MECH 342 course.
or
2) The student will choose to graduate under the 1999-2000 program. The extra credit hour in MECH 342 will be substituted for the 1 credit hour MECH 488.
When is ENGR 400 Ethics offered?
ENGR 400 is now taught ONLY during the spring semester. Any student that needs ENGR 400 in order to graduate must take it in the spring preceding his planned graduation date.
What are the Computer Programming Electives?
You need to take a programming course in a procedural language. CSCE150 will do.
What are the Design Electives?
You can choose from MECH 406, MECH 407, MECH 408, METL 466, METL 468,
MECH 442, MECH 450, MECH 455, and MECH 498 Mechatronic System
Design. A list of
planned design elective offerings
is also available.
What are the Technical Electives?
Technical electives are to be approved by the student's advisor from technical courses at the 3xx or 4xx level. One technical elective must be in an approved mechanical engineering or metallurgical engineering course. Consult your advisor for suggested choices. A list of planned Mechanical Engineering technical elective offerings is available.
How do I get credit for the math classes I placed out of?
Should a student take MATH 107 as his/her first math class at UNL and make a C of better, the student will be given 5 credits for MATH 106 at no cost. The credit will be added to the student's transcript upon the student filing the appropriate paper work with the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, 810 Oldfather Hall.
Should a student take MATH 208 as his/her first math class at UNL and make a C of better, the student will be given 10 credits for MATH 106 and 107 at no cost. The credit will be added to the student's transcript upon the student filing the appropriate paper work with the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, 810 Oldfather Hall.
What are the requirements for graduation with distinction, high distinction, and highest distinction?
The requirements for graduation with distinction and high distinction are currently based on GPA, with the GPA requirements set on a year-by-year basis by a College of Engineering and Technology committee.
There are no forms to fill out for this -- the department committee representative will see that you receive appropriate credit. As of July 2002, Dr. Wieslaw Szydlowski chairs the Scholarship and Honors Committee in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
The requirements for graduation with highest distinction are set by the department. Our requirements state that a mechanical engineering student will be eligible for graduation with highest distinction when he or she meets the following conditions:
- The student must be eligible for Graduate with High Distinction and
- One of the following conditions is met:
- The student achieves a grade point average of 4.000, or
- The student writes an honors thesis deemed to be of such a quality to merit Highest Distinction by the Department of Mechanical Engineering representative to the College of Engineering and Technology's Graduate with Distinction Committee and a committee of at least two other Mechanical Engineering faculty members the representative selects for this purpose, or
- The student demonstrates that Highest Distinction is warranted by voluntarily donating time to charitable or UNL causes and by serving as an officer in a major student organization, or
- The student serves as an officer in at least two major student organizations.
If you wish to graduate with highest distinction, please contact the chairman of the Scholarship and Honors Committee in the Mechanical Engineering Department so that we can confirm your eligibility and forward the information to the College of Engineering and Technology committee.
Can I substitute 3 credits of English Composition for ALEC 200 or 300?
No, you must take 6 credits of English composition as a substitute for ALEC 200 or 300.
