How to use the College PC lab

This is a brief tutorial on how to use the College PC lab facilities.

How to:

Get into the lab.
Swipe your card down through the reader, with your picture facing to the East (left) and the Magnetic Stripe facing West (right) next to the wall. You should hear the door latch engage, at which point you can pull the door open.

logon to a computer.
The computers in the lab run the Windows NT 4.0 operating system. These machines require a username to 'log on' to the computer. For now, each machine has a 'generic' username associated with it. The computer names are of the form engr-lab1 to engr-lab40. The usernames associated for each system are lab1 to lab40. For instance, if you sit down at engr-lab13 (the names are on the top left side of the monitor), the username you would type in is lab13. There is no password for the generic usernames.

To get to a login prompt, you will likely need to press CTRL-ALT-DELETE as it probably says on the screen. If the system is currently logged on, see the next item to logoff first. If you come to a point where it asks for a password, just press enter (or click on OK).

Eventually, each student will be assigned their own account, with their own password. In this case, you would use your username, and your password to login with. Also in this case, be sure to logoff when you are done!

logoff of a computer
To logoff of the system, so that nobody else can use your files and other things, you need to press CTRL-ALT-DELETE again. Then either type l for logoff, or click on the 'Logoff' button. You'll also need to press enter or click on 'OK' to make sure you want to logoff. When you are done, please leave the power on to the system.

print
The only printer defined so far is gutenberg. This is the printer between the restrooms. Please preview your documents before printing them to save paper. We are currently printing over 1000 pages per day.

save a file
Until individual accounts are created on the systems, the best way to save data is to keep it on a floppy disk. To save on the hard disk, you may use the C:\temp directory. NOTE however, that files in C:\temp will be cleaned on a periodic basis. Also, remember that files you put in C:\temp can be read by anyone using the machine. This includes other students working on the same assignment.

Files found in locations other than C:\temp will be removed as they are found.

run a program
Most of the programs that can be used on the computers are started via the Start menu. See the software page for the applications installed. There are a few other utilities in the menu also which are general NT utilities.

Telnet somewhere
Go to the 'Start->Programs->QVT' menu, and select WinQVT. Then, click the terminal icon (the one on the left). Either type in a host, or click on one of the hosts provided. You can start multiple telnet or ftp sessions by just clicking on the terminal icon addition times.
